Salt of the Earth

I've been thinking about the phrase "salt of the earth". It seems we use it to define people who are bland, moral, and hard-working. It's almost an insult, coming from some people's mouths. I started thinking about it after Husband saw me leaving out the salt from a recipe (healthier) and reminded me that salt is the ultimate flavor enhancer.

It struck me that people who are the salt of the earth must then be enhancing the world's flavor. The point isn't to draw attention to themselves, like a spice might be considered to do, but to make the world a better and more interesting place without being prominent themselves. Interesting. It's beautifully selfless but would appear to many as bland, since it's the world around instead of the person that improves. And it probably does take morality and hard work to reach that point. Hmm, I hope I'm the salt of the earth.
